Medicare rules on enrollment are federal, so they work the same in Oklahoma as anywhere else. What's different here is Oklahoma's birthday rule for people who already have a Medicare Supplement.
Most people sign up for Part A and Part B when they turn 65. The window lasts 7 months: it starts 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A. Part B has a monthly premium.
With Original Medicare, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) helps pay costs like your 20% coinsurance. Your one-time 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts the first month you are 65 or older and have Part B. During it, a company can't refuse to sell you a policy or charge you more for health problems. Afterward, outside guaranteed-issue situations, you may face health questions or higher prices.
Medigap policies generally don't cover prescriptions, so most people add a Part D plan. Going 63 days or more without Part D or other creditable drug coverage after your first window can mean a lifelong penalty.
If you or your spouse have job-based coverage, you may be able to delay Part B and sign up later during an 8-month Special Enrollment Period. COBRA doesn't count as job-based coverage. See retiring or losing employer coverage.
If a supplement premium doesn't fit your budget, we can also review Medicare Advantage plans I offer. See Supplement vs. Advantage.
