Turning 65 in Piedmont: what to do first

If you're in Piedmont and about to turn 65, a few dates decide whether you pay extra for Medicare for years to come. Here is what Medicare.gov says about late penalties, and why your supplement window comes right alongside them.

The window that matters most: Medigap Open Enrollment

Your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, 6-month window. It starts the first month you are 65 or older and have Medicare Part B. During it, a company can't refuse to sell you any Medigap policy it offers in Oklahoma and can't charge you more because of pre-existing health problems. After it ends, you may not be able to buy a policy, or it may cost more.

Late penalties for Part B and Part D

If you don't sign up for Part B when you're first eligible and don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, Medicare adds 10% to your Part B premium for each full 12-month period you could have had it, usually for as long as you have Part B. For drug coverage, going 63 days or more in a row without Part D or other creditable drug coverage after your first window can add 1% of the national base premium for each uncovered month. Your current plan must tell you each year whether its drug coverage is creditable.
