Turning 65 in Deer Creek: what to do first

If you live in the Deer Creek area and have a 65th birthday coming up, Jeff Spitler is close by in Edmond and can meet with you to map out your Medicare dates and compare Medicare Supplement options.

The window that matters most: Medigap Open Enrollment

Your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, 6-month window. It starts the first month you are 65 or older and have Medicare Part B. During it, a company can't refuse to sell you any Medigap policy it offers in Oklahoma and can't charge you more because of pre-existing health problems. After it ends, you may not be able to buy a policy, or it may cost more.

If you have a Health Savings Account

If you keep working and have an HSA, timing matters. Medicare.gov notes that if you sign up for premium-free Part A after you turn 65, Part A coverage generally starts up to 6 months back from when you sign up or apply for Social Security benefits, but not earlier than the month you turned 65. Since you can't contribute to an HSA while you have Medicare, ask your plan or a tax advisor when to stop contributions before you sign up.

Next steps

  1. Confirm your Part A and Part B start dates with Social Security or Medicare.gov.
  2. Mark your 6-month Medigap window, which starts with Part B once you are 65.
  3. Compare Medicare Supplement plan letters and add Part D drug coverage.
  4. If a supplement premium doesn't fit your budget, we can also review Medicare Advantage plans I offer.
